To check and print your Registration Confirmation:

Requirements for an acceptable, valid identification document depend on your country of citizenship and the location of your test center. See Identification requirements for detailed instructions. TOEFL iBT™ Test Scores Your scores are based on your performance on the questions in the test. You must answer at least one question each in the Reading and Listening sections, write at least one essay, and complete at least one Speaking task to receive an official score. For the Internet-based test, you will receive four scaled section scores and a total score: - Reading Section (Score of: 0 – 30)
- Listening Section (Score of: 0 – 30)
- Speaking Section (Score of: 0 – 30)
- Writing Section (Score of: 0 – 30)
- Total Score (0 – 120)
In addition to your scores, your official score record also includes performance feedback that is a reflection of your performance level and a description of the kinds of tasks that test takers within the reported score range can typically do. There is no passing or failing TOEFL® score; individual higher education institutions and agencies set their own score requirements. TOEFL scores are valid for two years after the test date and there is no limit to the number of times you can take the test. The Way the Test is Scored ETS uses both human raters and automated scoring methods because it offers a complete and accurate picture of an applicant's ability. While automated scoring models have advantages, they do not measure the effectiveness of the language response and the appropriateness of its content. Human raters are needed to attend to a wider variety of features, such as the quality of ideas and content as well as form. Additionally, studies have shown that prompts designed for fully automated scoring have been more vulnerable to prompt-specific preparation and memorized responses. The TOEFL test uses automated scoring to complement human scoring for the two tasks in the Writing section. Combining human judgment for content and meaning, and automated scoring for linguistic features, ensures consistent, quality scores. How We Ensure Quality ETS raters are trained extensively, pass a certification test and are calibrated daily. The calibration includes task familiarization, guidance on scoring the task, and practice on a range of responses. Raters are continuously monitored for accuracy by ETS scoring leaders and checked each time they score a new test question. Rating Is Kept Apart from Test Administration To ensure the security and integrity of scores, it is critical that scoring not take place at test sites, but rather through a centralized scoring network that implements and ensures consistent scoring standards. The TOEFL test is scored by a network of raters, carefully controlled from a secure central location. ETS uses a highly diverse pool of raters rather than those exclusive to an applicant's country of origin, and ETS raters score responses anonymously for truly objective scoring. Multiple raters' judgments contribute to each test taker's Speaking and Writing scores in order to minimize rater bias. Getting Your TOEFL iBT™ Test Scores View Your TOEFL iBT™ Scores Online Days After Test Day Another advantage of the TOEFL iBT test, administered in an internet-based format, is to be able to view your scores online just a few days after you take the test. To view your scores online, log in to your TOEFL iBT™ account on the TOEFL Registration website and click "View Scores" on your home page. See the list of dates below to see when you will be able to view your scores. Be sure you will be able to get your scores in before any application deadlines. Official Score Reports Printed score reports are mailed within two weeks after your test date. Allow 7 – 10 days for delivery in the U.S. and more time for other locations. Your scores are valid for two years and can be sent to other higher education institutions during that time. Under certain specific conditions, this data may be shared: - ETS or its authorized representative(s) may share test takers' score data with institutions or agencies for verification purposes.
- TOEFL test score data or writing and speaking responses that are not individually identified may be used at any time for informational, research, statistical or training purposes. - Official score reports will be sent only to those institutions or agencies chosen by the test taker when he or she registered to test, on a Score Report Request Form submitted at a later date, or otherwise authorized by the test taker.
- Test takers who provide their TOEFL registration numbers to an entity (e.g., governmental immigration offices) are deemed to have authorized release of their TOEFL score data to that entity. Do not provide your registration number to anyone unless you want to grant them access to your score data.

Inquiries on Test Questions Language specialists prepare TOEFL test questions. These specialists follow careful, standardized procedures developed to ensure that all test material is of consistent high quality. Each question is reviewed by several members of the ETS staff. The TOEFL Committee of Examiners, an independent group of professionals in the fields of linguistics, language testing and language teaching that reports to the TOEFL Board, establishes overall guidelines for the test content and specifications. After test questions have been reviewed and revised as appropriate, they are selectively administered in trial situations and assembled into tests. The tests are then reviewed according to established ETS and TOEFL program procedures to ensure that all possible versions of the test are free of cultural bias. Statistical analyses of individual questions ensure that all items provide appropriate measurement information. Although ETS employs extensive quality control checks throughout the development of test questions and the preparation of final tests, typographical errors or flaws in questions may occasionally occur. If you suspect a problem and want to question a test item for any reason, notify the test administrator before you leave the test site. Send it to: TOEFL iBT Complaints MS 16-Z, Internet-Based Testing Network Group Educational Testing Service Rosedale Road Princeton, NJ 08541-6163, USA ETS Score Cancellation Policy ETS strives to report scores that accurately reflect the performance of every test taker. The standards and procedures for administering tests have two goals: giving test takers equivalent opportunities to demonstrate their abilities and preventing any test takers from gaining an unfair advantage over others. To promote these objectives, ETS reserves the right to cancel any test score when, in its judgment, a testing irregularity occurs, there is an apparent discrepancy in a test taker's identification, the test taker engages in misconduct, the test taker attempts to use the work or ideas of others as their own in the Speaking or Writing section of the test, or the score is invalid for another reason. Reviews of scores by ETS are confidential. When, for any of the above reasons, ETS cancels a test score that has already been reported, it notifies score recipients that the score has been canceled, but does not disclose the reason for cancellation except when authorized to do so by the test taker and in certain group cases. Problems with Giving the Test Sometimes there are problems with the administration of a test. When this occurs, it may affect an individual or group of test takers. Such problems include, without limitation, administrative errors (such as improper timing, improper seating, defective materials and defective equipment); improper access to test content; and other disruptions of test administrations (such as natural disasters and other emergencies). When testing irregularities occur, ETS may decline to score the test or may cancel the test score. When it is appropriate in ETS’s judgment to do so, ETS gives affected test takers the opportunity to take the test again as soon as possible without charge. Valid Identification When, in the judgment of ETS or test center personnel, there is a discrepancy in a test taker's identification, the test taker may be dismissed from the test center. In addition, ETS may decline to score the test or may cancel the test score and the test fee will be forfeited. See valid forms of identification. Misconduct When ETS or test center personnel find that there is misconduct in connection with a test, the test taker may be dismissed from the test center, or ETS may decline to score the test or may cancel the test score. Test takers whose scores are canceled because of misconduct will forfeit their test fees. Misconduct includes, but is not limited to, noncompliance with the "Test Center Procedures and Regulations" in the TOEFL iBT™ Registration Bulletin. See TOEFL iBT™ Registration Bulletin (PDF). Plagiarism ETS reserves the right to cancel scores when: (1) there is evidence that an essay or spoken response includes text or ideas that are substantially similar to those found in other TOEFL responses, or (2) quotations, paraphrasing, language or ideas are used without attribution from published and unpublished sources. Such responses do not reflect the independent speaking or compositional writing skills that the test seeks to measure. Invalid Scores ETS may also cancel scores if, in its judgment, there is substantial evidence that they are invalid for any other reason. Evidence of invalid scores may include, without limitation, unusual answer patterns and/or inconsistent performance on different parts of the test. Before canceling scores pursuant to this paragraph, ETS notifies the test taker in writing about its concerns, gives the test taker an opportunity to submit information that addresses those concerns, considers any such information submitted, and offers the test taker a choice of options. The options include voluntary score cancellation or arbitration in accordance with the ETS standard Arbitration Agreement. In addition, the test taker is sent a copy of the booklet Why and How Educational Testing Service Questions Test Scores, which explains this process in greater detail. This booklet is available to any test taker at any time upon request from the ETS Office of Testing Integrity. Call 1-800-353-8570 or e-mail TSReturns@ets.org. Note: The arbitration option is available only for tests administered in the United States.

- What is the Reading section like?
-
- The Reading section includes three to five reading passages. There are 12 to 14 questions per passage. You have from 60 to 100 minutes to answer all the questions in the section.
- TOEFL iBT Reading passages are excerpts from university-level textbooks that would be used in introductions to a discipline or topic. The passages will cover a variety of different subjects. Don't worry if you're unfamiliar with the topic of a passage. All the information you need to answer the questions will be in the passage.
See TOEFL sample questions. - What is the Listening section like?
-
The Listening section includes test questions about academic lectures and long conversations in which the speech sounds very natural. You can take notes on any listening material throughout the entire test. The test is composed of: - Four to six lectures, each three to five minutes long, six questions per lecture, 60 to 90 minutes
- Two to three conversations, each three minutes long, five questions per conversation, 60 to 90 minutes
See TOEFL sample questions. - What is the Speaking section like?
-
The Speaking section is approximately 20 minutes long and includes six questions. - The first two questions are called "independent Speaking tasks" because they require you to draw entirely on your own ideas, opinions and experiences when you respond.
- The other four questions are called "integrated Speaking tasks" because they require you to integrate your English-language skills — listening and speaking or listening, reading and speaking — just as you would in or out of a classroom.
You will speak into the microphone on your headset and your responses will be recorded and sent to the ETS Scoring Network, where they will be scored by certified human raters. See TOEFL sample questions and responses. - How are my Speaking responses scored?
-
- Your recorded responses are sent to the ETS Scoring Network, where three to six certified human raters score them holistically on a scale of 0 to 4. The average score on the six tasks is converted to a scaled score of 0 to 30.
- Raters do not expect your responses to be perfect, and even high-scoring responses may contain occasional errors. Your pronunciation does not need to sound like that of a native speaker of English. The raters are listening for the effectiveness of your communication and your ability to accomplish the tasks you are given.
- See the Speaking scoring guides (PDF) and listen to sample responses to help you understand how responses are evaluated.
- What is the Writing section like?
-
The total time for the Writing section is 50 minutes. You are asked to write responses to two writing tasks: an integrated Writing task and an independent Writing task. - Integrated Writing task (20 minutes) — read a short passage and listen to a short lecture. Then write in response to what you read and listened to.
- Independent Task (30 minutes) — write an essay in response to a Writing topic.
Get The Official Guide to the TOEFL® Test for a longer list of topics. Go to the ETS store to purchase The Official Guide to the TOEFL® Test. You'll type your responses on the computer keyboard and then your responses will be sent to the ETS Scoring Network. See TOEFL sample questions and responses. - How are Writing responses scored?
-
- Writing responses are scored holistically on a scale of 0 to 5. The average score on the two tasks is converted to a scaled score of 0 to 30.
- You're not expected to produce a comprehensive essay about a specialized topic — your response is recognized as a first draft. You can receive a high score with an essay that contains some errors.
- See the Writing Scoring Guides (PDF) and read sample responses to help you understand how responses are evaluated.
